Meet Tammy: Our Vice President

At The Concannon Insurance Agency, it seems as though insurance and risk management runs through our team’s DNA. Tammy Mayer -- our Vice President -- has been with us since 1995 and in this business for more than four decades. Get to know this friendly face in our Q&A with her here!

Q: Tell us about what drew you to the insurance industry and where you started before joining The Concannon Insurance Agency.

I was in high school and enrolled in the COE (cooperative education) program. This program allowed me to attend school for half of the day, and work half of the day.  During this time, I started working at St. Paul Insurance Company and after the semester was over they hired me full-time. I moved to the insurance brokerage side in 1985 and started with the Concannon team in 1995.

I guess you could say I didn’t find the insurance industry -- the insurance industry found me!”

Q: What is your favorite part about being in the insurance and risk management industry?

“I really enjoy interfacing with our clients and helping them solve problems or challenges that they may have. Knowing our expertise can help them is rewarding. From a personal perspective, if you are invested in the industry and are dedicated, this is a very stable career choice.”

Q: The past year has been challenging, to say the least. How have you maintained some normalcy through it all?

“When there started to be talks of possible worldwide shutdown, we were proactive. Thankfully, Jim Concannon made sure that everyone who works at The Concannon Insurance Agency was  adequately set up to work from home.  We all have professional and comfortable work-from-home setups with ergonomic equipment, computers, scanners/printers, etc. The transition was fairly seamless for us. Because we were prepared for this change, we were able to stay focused on our clients and help them as they navigated through the ‘new normal’ of running a business during a global pandemic.”

Q: What do you do in your spare time?

“My husband is a Moolah Shrine Member -- and so are my father, son and son-in-law! They support Shriners Hospital for Children, which has locations in many states. We support and attend many functions and events that raise money for the hospital.

I love spending time with my family. We recently had our first grandchild and he brings so much joy into our life. We also love our weekly Thursday night dinners with my family, father and sometimes, special friends.”

Q: As an outdoorsman, have you stumbled upon any new hidden gems in the St. Louis area that you’ve discovered?

“Over the years we didn’t get to venture out much as my autistic son doesn’t like to be away from home overnight. In 2018, we decided to purchase a travel trailer so we could have a familiar place for him to sleep while we traveled around to different camping facilities. We now get to see many small towns in Missouri by taking four-day weekends to travel each month.

One of our favorite places has been Caledonia, Missouri; it is a small town with a quaint feel. We love frequenting the mercantile shop there that includes a cute ice cream shop and antiques. It’s special to us, and also to support small towns and businesses in Missouri.”

Thank you for taking the time to read about our wonderful team here at The Concannon Insurance Agency, and stay tuned for more staff spotlights!
